The international legacy of 2014 World Cup in Brazil
With less than a year to go before the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has learned lessons from other countries that have struggled to find a post-tournament role for their World Cup facilities.
Brazil’s Manaus stadium is in the middle of the Amazon and it can only be reached by air or river.
The stadium took four years to build and the local government is still paying back the $160m construction loan to the federal government, with little return to show for the investment.
It is one of 12 stadiums Brazil built for the 2014 World Cup. The stadium was used for just four matches during the World Cup. Now, it sits mostly unused and even for big matches, gate receipts do not cover the cost of operating the stadium.
Organisers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have said that seating from their World Cup stadiums will be donated to poorer countries after the event, for use in their arenas, while all the stadiums will provide community facilities.
