Episode 28 of AOT the final season was called The Dawn of Humanity.

During the time skip between seasons 3 and 4 the survey corps were looking for alternatives to the rumbling cause they didn’t want to rely on it for their survival. Relying on the rumbling would mean that Historia and her descendants would need to become royal blooded titans and to avoid this outcome Hange suggested that they should travel to Marley. By doing this they could learn more about the enemy and hopefully find a solution and episode 28 follows directly on from this. As the scouts set foot on the continent they’re greeted by Onyankopon, who arrived in Marley at an earlier date after presumably being brought there by the Kiyomi. His job is to take the group to the Azumabito estate but first we get a few moments of the eldians exploring the outside world and badly trying to blend in with modern society. Because this is their first time leaving the island they’ve literally never seen things like clowns, or ice cream or cars, which is why Hange started waving at it like it was some kind of farm animal. While most of the group was visibly excited to be here, from the start of the episode Eren had a depressed look on his face and often looked like he was deep in thought about something. The main reason his mood was so terrible compared to everyone else was cause he’s realising that all these people and everything around them will one day be wiped out because of him. Back when he kissed Historia’s hand he saw future memories of his full scale rumbling but for a few years he let himself believe that this future might be avoidable. Eren had originally hoped that freedom for the island and freedom for his friends could be achieved a different way but after trying and failing, at this point he was 90% certain that the memories he saw were unavoidable. That’s why he consistently had this vacant expression, since he was processing the reality that he has no other option but to he destroy everything he’s currently looking at. It’s interesting when we contrast Eren’s gloomy expression with Armin’s excitement, cause from a young age they’ve both had this dream to see what was out there but only one of them is burdened with this knowledge of the future.

Now before we move on, I thought it was worth mentioning the significance of Eren and Mikasa’s interactions in these early stages. On two separate occasions he was in a complete trance thinking about the terrible things that are going to happen and both times Mikasa shows up to break him out of that thought process. In my opinion this was foreshadowing for later in the episode, when Mikasa had the chance to break him away from this reality where he does the rumbling. In this one moment Eren was willing to forget about the awful future he’d seen and go down a completely different path but it all depended on how Mikasa responded to his question.

Later when Mikasa notices that Eren isn’t there, everyone goes to look for him and she eventually finds him by himself outside this refugee camp. Although she didn’t see it he was crying before she arrived and this is proof that right now Eren is mentally at his lowest point as is questioning whether the rumbling is something he wants to do. Remember when he spoke to Reiner earlier this season he revealed that he used to think everyone in Marley was an enemy but it was once he crossed the sea that he realised they were all the same. This is something Eren only understood once he got here and it’s why for this one single moment, he was willing to abandon everything and run away with Mikasa. As she approaches him he goes on to explain that these refugees are similar to the eldians, in that one day their regular lives were suddenly taken away from them and now they have no freedom.

AOT PART 2

Episode 23 of Attack on titan Season 4 was called ‘sunset’, in which Captain Levi returns, Annie’s backstory is revealed and Floch and the Yeagerists continues to take control of Paradis.

In this opening scene Hitch and other MPs help to pull an injured civilian from the rubble and as the bodies pile up, the citizens start to question whether Eren’s actions were worth the sacrifice. On one side you have people who see Eren as a sort of villain for killing his own people, whereas on the other side you have those who believe these deaths are a necessary sacrifice to stop them all being wiped out by Marley (and the world). As violence breaks out between the civilians Hitch then returns to HQ to gather more resources to deal with it but as she enters the building she notices this trail of liquid. The trail leads out from from the basement where the Female Titan’s crystal has been locked away for years and this was deliberate trap that Annie had set. By leaving the basement door open and not covering her tracks, she was purposefully hoping that someone would follow the trail, at which point she’d ambush them, steal their clothes and sneak out of town. What she wasn’t expecting though was that the person to come through this door would be Hitch, as these two have a history together not only as roommates in the MPs but also because Hitch was the main person who was monitoring this crystal the whole time.

Now in this moment Annie is easily overpowered by her former roommate, since having not moved a muscle in four years, her energy level is understandably quite low. This enabled Hitch to pin her down without much problem but the issue here is that the female titan had already cut herself with this special ring. The blade inside this ring is what she typically uses to transform and so in theory she can use her power to become a titan and obliterate HQ in the process. Of course there’s a possibility that in her weakened state she doesn’t have the strength to do that, but it wasn’t a chance hITCH WAS willing to take. With the power of the titans being so unpredictable it was safer for everyone in the building if she just did what Annie said and that’s how the two of them end up in the stables. The plan here is that Hitch would quietly take the female titan outside of the district and in this sequence we get an insight into what it’s like to live inside a titan crystal. The way Annie describes it’s like she was in a state of partial consciousness where she could hear when people were talking to her but other than that it was basically like a dark dream.

As we know she was then freed from her crystal when Eren undid all hardening in the world and once she sees the wall titans in the district, Annie realises that his transmission wasn’t a bluff. On the ground we see more carnage as people mourn their dead relatives and Hitch makes an interesting comment that her only meaningful work has been cleaning up after the destruction. Generally speaking this statement is true for most MPs as their job usually doesn’t involve improving humanity in any way and for most of their existence they’ve been used as a tool to prevent society from progressing. For that reason you can see why Hitch would find some meaning in helping people rebuild after these disasters, and the first time she had to do this job was after the female titan tore up stohess all those years ago.

Switching over to the internment zone in Liberio we then see one of the more realistic aspects of the rumbling, which is that these eldians have to actually try and convince regular people that they’re about to be trampled. Given that Eren’s declaration was only heard by subjects of Ymir, the Marlyean guards have no way of verifying what the crowd is telling them and the guy in charge seems to believe this is all some kind of elaborate eldian conspiracy.

The anime then transitions very nicely to the sound of shots on the island, as instructor Shadis overhears Floch firing at the volunteers.
