HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Burnley (0-0) | Premier League

We were held to a goalless draw by an obdurate Burnley side on a frustrating afternoon in N5 on Sunday

Mikel Arteta was looking for a response from his side after our Carabao Cup semi-final defeat in midweek, but we found it tough going against an organised and disciplined Clarets team.

Aaron Ramsdale was the first of the two keepers to be called into action, making a smart save to turn away a Dwight McNeil cross that deflected towards goal, before Ben Mee hooked a shot from the resulting corner over the bar.

With the visitors getting men behind the ball in numbers, it was tough to find space to operate in the attacking third – and soon Alex Lacazette took matters into his own hand, beating two men and racing into the box, but he shot wide.

Our captain on the day came close again not long afterwards when a flowing move forward opened up the visitors, but Lacazette’s shot was saved by Nick Pope and his follow-up was blocked.

Kieran Tierney sent a shot over the bar as we continued to threaten, while Bukayo Saka curled a shot just wide right on the stroke of half time.

Burnley continued to frustrate us after the restart, and as the game moved past the hour mark, Martin Odegaard had come closest for us with a free kick that grazed the top of the bar.

Emile Smith Rowe was soon picked out by a well-worked corner, but his goalbound shot was saved by Nick Pope – and that chance got the crowd going as they sought to lift the team.

Suddenly new life had been brought into the game, and Smith Rowe’s energy was causing the Clarets all sorts of problems.

Our No 10 soon had another shot blocked, and then made a brilliant, lung-busting run up the left and into the box, only to see his cutback poked inches wide by Lacazette.

As the clock ticked down, frustrations grew as we struggled to find the breakthrough – although Gabriel tested Pope with a firm header from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross with five minutes remaining.

McNeil nearly snatched it for the visitors in stoppage time, shooting inches over at the end of a counter attack – but there was to be no late twist as we had to settle for a point.

1) Arteta admits he wishes 23-year-old wasn’t in Arsenal’s starting line-up last night

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted after the defeat to Liverpool last night that he didn’t want Takehiro Tomiyasu to start.

Arteta revealed before the game that a number of players were forced to start despite not training for a week.

Tomiyasu, who has been absolutely incredible this season, was one of them, and you could see that in his performance at right-back last night.

2) Thomas Partey blames himself not Arteta for red card

Thomas Partey admits he needs to be “more intelligent” after he was sent off during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool.

Partey flew back from the Africa Cup of Nations following Ghana’s exit and landed in London on the afternoon of the Liverpool clash, declaring himself available as he was named on the Arsenal bench.

3) Al Hilal make ‘hugely attractive’ offer to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has received a loan proposal from Al Hilal, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners reportedly want to part company with the 32-year-old in the January transfer window.

Aubameyang lost the Arsenal captaincy in December after a disciplinary breach.

4) Arsenal have to get back on track

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have to get back to winning ways following a frustrating start to 2022 which has seen his side slip down the Premier League and exit both domestic cups in the space of four games.

While the Gunners are only two points adrift of fourth place and have at least one game in hand on four of the five sides above them in the table, the boss is under no illusions of the importance of getting back on track following last night’s disheartening Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

5) Bernd Leno wants to leave Arsenal

Arsenal are set to lose goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, during the January transfer window after the German became disillusioned with life at the club under Mikel Arteta.

Reports have claimed that a number of clubs want to take Leno from the Gunners this month, including Newcastle United. There is also interest from Italy, and the German stopper could be open to a move to try and salvage his World Cup squad hopes.

6) Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have agreed personal terms with 27-year-old

Arsenal are continuing with their pursuit of USA goalkeeper, Matt Turner, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that personal terms are all but agreed and it’s now up to the clubs to do a deal.

Sky reported yesterday how Turner was now a surprise target for the Gunners. A new goalkeeper could be on the agenda for Arsenal, with Bernd Leno said to be seeking an exit from the club before the month ends.

7) ‘White smoke could be imminent’ for Arsenal transfer if they improve bid

Not a day has gone by this week without an update from somewhere in Italy regarding the potential transfer taking Arthur from Juventus to Arsenal.

The latest was that, following a meeting with Federico Pastorello, the Gunners were more open to the idea of making their offer a longer one, going from six months to potentially 18, thus allowing the Brazilian time to settle in the team and in England.

8) David Ornstein drops Dusan Vlahovic update

Arsenal are keen to complete a move for Dusan Vlahovic this month, according to David Ornstein.

Few are more trustworthy than Ornstein when it comes to anything Arsenal related, so for him to say that the north London giants are keen to fund a move for him this month is hugely, hugely encouraging and it should leave the Emirates Stadium faithful absolutely buzzing with excitement.

There are a little over ten days left to go and it appears as if Vlahovic is the priority for Mikel Arteta and co.
